Sometimes you just can’t go for a run and that’s when you need one of the best treadmills for home use.

To live a healthy life, it is important to exercise and workout on daily basis. Exercise not only keeps you fit but also provides you energy and keep you fresh and alert. Running and jogging is some of the best exercises that a person can do. Among the best ways to lose weight and also great for your heart. And no matter what type of exercise you’re about to do, running, walking or jogging is the best way to warm up your body. People often do not have much time to go to a park or a track for running and walk therefore, you can check out treadmills which will help you to jog or walk at your own home.

Sometimes you cannot go to a park, use the streets or even a track due to inclement weather conditions like snow, rain etc. but with the help of a treadmill, you can work out in the usual way. As the changing trends in technology are growing, day-by-day new and better treadmills are being introduced in the market as well. Now the best treadmills for home use have several other features that help you to work out. The type of treadmill also depends on type of runner you are. Like if you are a professional runner, you need a treadmill that shows distance, have good motor, it may have batteries etc. However, buying an economy treadmill will not support a professional runner’s needs.

Likewise, if you are overweight you need a treadmill that shows distance, time and number of calories as well and if you are concerned with heart rate etc, it may also tell you your blood pressure status as well as heartbeat. These types of treadmills are normally economical in cost but this cost also varies as the treadmill type varies. If there is a high-tech treadmill that has all the features, it will be expensive. The best treadmills for home are the ones which are economical in cost and have all the features as per your requirement.

Size also matters while buying a treadmill. If you are living in a small apartment with no additional space you require a small treadmill that can fold and you can keep it anywhere by just folding it. If you require a treadmill for gym, you will buy a big size that can have a proper grip on the floor and you can work out easily. However, again many variations and quality types differ from your requirements and usage. People usually prefer small, well-equipped and strong treadmills for the home.

Prices of the best treadmills for home depends on the motor of the treadmill, the bigger the motor the more it will cost. If you need an extensive and high intensity workout you will have to buy a treadmill with a bigger motor and it will be more expensive. However, if you want to have a normal workout at your home, the ideal treadmill will be with small motor and will not cost too much. While buying a treadmill for your home or anywhere really, it is always necessary to have a treadmill with quality cushioning system, as it will support your back and gives you a comfortable run. Bad cushioning can be a cause of back pain and other injuries.

Another important feature that people want while buying a treadmill is a kind of elevation. There should be elevation with certain levels on a treadmill, this incline will help you to work out by exiling more energy and help you to warm up earlier and lose weight. A 1% incline can simulate an outdoors run suitably.

You’ll also find that some have additional features, as stepper machines which increase its utility. With more features, the price will certainly shoot up.

Weights are one of those items where it seems that paying more money than necessary is a complete waste of time, so it wouldn’t hurt your training to buy cheap dumbbells right?. Let’s think about that for a second.

You want some weights for your home gym. You don’t want to pay the earth because, like everyone, you’re on a budget. What benefit will you get from expensive weights?

Better grips

Better quality materials

More finely crafted weights

Designer logo

And will this make your muscles bigger? Will it make bigger muscles easier to create? Probably not, although nicer equipment can motivate to some degree and that’s worth something.

In essence, although cheap dumbbells may not be quite as good as some of the more expensive ones, the different is so slight as not to be noticeable.

And the simple truth remains…

Using even the worst dumbbells in the world is infinitely better than using no dumbbells at all.

Not having any weights can be an excuse. In the same way that people say, “I can’t join a gym, it’s too expensive, I’ll stay overweight and unhappy.”

If you have no money, buy some cheap dumbbells and research some programs and build yourself up sensibly and inexpensively.

Here are my recommended

Cheap Dumbbells

The Cap Barbell 40-Pounds Cement Dumbbell Set

The beauty of this little set is that it’s made with cement, making the age old problem of rust redundant.

And I also vote for the

Cap Barbell 40-Pound Dumbbell Set

It’s no surprise that both are the Cap brand, as I really like them and I think they offer phenomenal value for money.

If you fall into one of the following categories:

Want to tone your upper body

Need to lose a little weight

Concerned that you’re losing your hard edge

Don’t want to join a gym for whatever reason

Are building a home gym

Then I will heartily recommend some cheap dumbbells as one of the basics of your plan.

Choosing the best elliptical trainer can often be a matter of personal taste, depending on what exactly you are looking for. The main considerations being quality and cost.

An elliptical machine is an exercise device and if you think you’ve never seen one, think again. Virtually every gym or fitness club in the country will have at least one, and commonly many more than one. They are almost omnipresent. And with good reason.

Being able to simulate the actions of running, walking and in many instances, climbing stairs, with all of the related benefits, and none of the accompanying negatives, is of major benefit to any fitness club. Were you to actually go outside to do some running or walking you would:

Need to brave the elements. Fair enough if you live in LA, not always great if you live in DC

Need somewhere safe to run. Many of us live in neighbourhoods where safety is a concern, especially if we were to go running at unsociable hours.

Strong knees and hips and shoes. Using the best elliptical trainer can remove all the stresses associated with running and jogging.

So that’s why these devices are so popular.

If you wanted to buy your own as opposed to using one in the gym you’d have to think about which qualities the best elliptical trainer to buy would have.

Size. You’ll want to ensure you have enough space to house this quite large piece of exercise equipment.

Weight. You’ll really need to read some reviews of the item you’re thinking of buying as you don’t want it to be too flimsy and it MUST be steady when you’re thrashing around on it.

Options. The best elliptical trainer will need to have all the different capabilities possible to support you in getting fit. Will it have bars to work your arms? Will it have a built in heart rate monitor? It’s really like looking at an advanced or a basic model. It will need to have different levels so you can continuously challenge yourself.

We’ll have a look now at a budget version, a middle of the road and a trainer with all the bells and whistles you could ever need.

So which one is the

Best Elliptical Trainer

The Gazelle Edge

At the lower cost end is the Gazelle Edge

It’s a basic machine, but that doesn’t mean it’s not great. In fact it totally does the job you need it to, which is to burn calories, tone your muscles and improve your cardiovascular fitness levels.

It’s a glider model so it puts very little pressure on your joints, making it suitable for all ages.

With a 5 function computer giving instant feedback on the metrics that matter to you, this extraordinarily reasonable little machine will get your heart pumping and your extra weight just falling off.

The Horizon Fitness EX-59

This is the best rated on the whole of Amazon and while this might signal the best elliptical trainer, it also may signify the most popular but then again, often these are the same thing. After all things are popular for a reason.

The EX-59 contains state of the art technology with 10 program options, enabling on the fly adjustments so you can change what you’re doing immediately and even a custom workout option.

There are many other mod cons that have to be seen to be believed:

Surround Speakers, including MP3 input, with a headphone jack if you don’t want to disturb the rest of your household with your workout music.

Advanced biomechanical design giving you the best foot position and pedal placement while you’re getting on and off and of course while you’re exercising.

Quiet moving parts.

A comfy grip.

Sturdy build, with a 275 lb capacity.

All in all an incredible piece of machinery that truly deserves both its popularity and its renown.

Expensive and Best Elliptical Trainer

The Sole E55 Elliptical Trainer

The Sole E55 is the ultimate home trainer. Weighing a hefty 200 pounds, so you know you’re not going to disturb it while pounding away, this wonderfully designed piece of exercise equipment can accommodate up to 375 pounds giving you the ultimate security.

Blue LCD display tracks every stat you want to know, including time, duration, distance, calories, pulse etc.

With a lifetime warranty on the frame, whisper quiet action and inbuilt cooling fans, you know you’ve got a winner with the Sole E55. With all the features of a high performing fitness club trainer, you’ll feel like you’re at the gym while you’re in the comfort of your own home.

While the best elliptical trainer for you might not be one of these (I’d be surprised if it wasn’t) they’re all well worth some more investigation.

Seeing as it’s true that all males want a six pack, core exercises for men are incredibly important. And to be honest, it’s a hugely overlooked area.

Now, I’m not saying that abs or midsection exercises are overlooked, but the reality is that you’ll get a much leaner midsection by working your core than by doing exercise that isolates abdominal muscles alone. Besides this, you’ll be stronger, fitter and better looking by improving your core strength.

Core exercises for men aren’t the most advertised thing in the world. Check out the usage of the Swiss ball, or exercise ball, in any gym and I’ll bet you more often than not, it’s a woman using it. In fact, I’ll put money on the fact that most guys have never even thought about the benefits they could get from using such an innocuous piece of equipment.

Just think about it briefly. Why balance on a ball to do some crunches?

If you haven’t figured it out yet, it’s because you need to balance while you’re doing them. And so what? Big deal, I’m good at balancing, hooray! Well, what do you think is stabilizing your body while you’re balancing in this precarious position?

That’s right, your core muscles, importantly this includes your abs. Work on your core if you want better abs.

Before I touch briefly on some core exercises for men, I would like to mention that if your six pack is not visible yet, lose some fat from your belly. Six packs are definitely affected by what you eat, and nobody can see them if they’re covered with a layer of fat. Simple carbs and junk food. The enemy of the six pack.

Right, now to some

Core Exercises For Men

Body Weight Exercises

Hanging Leg Raises – Hang from a pull up bar and raise your legs 90 degrees, keeping your legs straight as well as your back. Don’t swing, you’ll ruin the effect.

The V Sit Hold – If you don’t know this one, you’ll understand why it’s so named in a second. Begin seated and raise your legs 45 degrees. Reach your arms forward towards your legs. Hold there and you’ll know that you are working your core. Lower your legs slowly but hold again just before they hit the ground.

Ball Exercises

These are very simple indeed, Get a ball and balance on it while doing traditional exercises.

Crunches – Ball beneath your back. Give that a try and see how many you can do. I bet it’s less than you can on the ground.

Planks – Put the ball beneath your feet, preferably a smaller one. The difference has to be felt to be believed.

Roll ins – Here you are in the push up position with the ball beneath your ankles. Bring your knees up to your chest keeping your ankles on the ball. Take your knees back. Repeat.

I would say that my favourite core exercise is the simple squat. I hold a weight above my head and squat. That’s how I like it. Simple yet effective.

For a more detailed group of exercises and excellent all-round 6 pack program, check out the Truth About Abs.

Core exercises for men are so important for that all round great look, not to mention what they do for your strength. Don’t neglect your core!

As a bodybuilder, or just someone who wants to shed fat, you’ve probably heard of hoodia before and of the fabled hoodia side effects. And if not, I’ll explain.

Hoodia is a plant from South Africa that supposedly quells the appetite and helps you lose weight and fat, but does it work?

Well, yeah, it does. It stops you feeling hungry and that’s brilliant. No need to eat as much. Less calories means faster weight loss, giving you more visible muscles. Maybe even allowing you to have a six pack to be proud of.

Unfortunately, not eating is one of the worst things you can do to shed fat and get ripped. And that’s for more than one reason. So, for me, the worst of the hoodia side effects is that it:

at best doesn’t do what I’m expecting it to

and at worst, has the opposite effect

First of all, you need energy to work out. Those muscles aren’t going to build themselves. Going without food for hours and hours before a workout is a disaster. Not only will it prevent you from working out to the best of your ability but the ensuing pain and exhaustion may well affect your motivation levels and make your exercise plan lose a bit of its sparkle.

So, you get up in the morning and you want to kick start your metabolism. So what do you do? Many people eat some carbs, get some caffeine, amongst other things. But missing breakfast? Bad news. You don’t need a slow metabolism when you’re trying to lose weight.

You’re much better off with something like Whey Protein for a supplement. At least you know that’s going to have a positive effect.

Now it’s true to say that people who eat less generally weigh less, but look at all the top athletes in the world. How many of them are super skinny? Not many. Long distance runners maybe. And not many of us have goals that include ‘get really skinny and hungry looking’

If you take hoodia and it ruins your appetite then how are you going to get all the sustenance that your body needs? How will you get the vitamins and minerals that are so important for overall health? Multi-Vitamins? Hmm. Just eat some salad.

The other downside of hoodia is that it hasn’t been certified to actually do what it’s claimed. The manufacturers of products containing hoodia will say that it suppresses appetite and so will the people who use it, but I’ll be honest. I wouldn’t use it unless it was certified safe and useful. I really take issue with chemicals that I don’t know are safe.

Your best bet is to not worry about appetite suppressants and use the age old method of losing weight that is infallible and has worked for as long as people have been overweight. Burn off more than you consume. Oversimplified sure, but it works. Eat less and move more. The more time you spend with gimmicks and unproven methods and supplements, the less time you’ll have to be carrying out what actually gives great results. The hoodia side effects are just not worth it.

Many people now like to build themselves home gyms and a very important part of that is the weight benches you have to choose from.

In essence a fitness bench (also known as a weight bench or a weight training bench) is so known because of the similarity to a park bench, but there’s no bums on these.

They are created to be adjustable and are pretty much a staple of any gym. Even in today’s world where core training has taken so much of the limelight, the best fitness bench can still be the center of any gym or weights room.

Weight Benches

Now in my considered opinion, and it’s shared by the good customers of the biggest online retailer, that the best fitness bench is the Cap Barbell Fitness FID Bench.

Pros

It’s inexpensive – You’d expect to pay hundreds of dollars for something like this, but the FID is less than 50 bucks from Amazon.

It’s adjustable – 4 positions are available and let’s face it, you won’t need more than that. Upright, incline, decline and flat.

Easy to put together and durable

It holds dumbbells within easy reach

The handgrips are comfortable and pliable so you don’t tear your hands when lifting your legs.

Cons

It ‘only’ has a capacity of 250 pounds

If you’re over 6’ tall forget about it

This is an item that will last. At least until you hit pro level. Great for the beginner and intermediate lifter.

Want something a little more beefy? Look no further than the Bowflex SelectTech 3.1 Series Adjustable Bench. In my opinion, better than its more expensive big brother, the 5.1.

With all the benefits of the FID unit above, but with much more.

Adjustable pads, grips and bars to minimize possibility of injury when lifting heavy weights.

Has a person capacity of 300 pounds and will support a further 300 pounds in weights.

Heavy duty, yet attractive and easy to clean vinyl base.

Suitable for people over 6 feet tall

In my opinion these are the best weight bench options for a home gym if you’re serious about lifting.

Often food and how it affects the body are the last thing on a bodybuilders mind, but the simple fact is that bodybuilding nutrition is super important.

While just eating intelligently won’t build your muscles, it will fuel your body so that you’ll have enough energy to really make a difference. This tiny fact is something that many bodybuilders overlook.

And when I say ‘intelligently’ it’s not just about the food you’re taking in, but when you’re doing it. And I’m guessing that 50% of everyone who lifts weights to get ripped wouldn’t even have considered such a thing. And if they have, the confusion is immense:

Should I eat just before I workout?

Should I eat afterwards?

When should I have carbs?

And when should I eat all my protein?

Bodybuilding Nutrition

To answer these questions is simple. The best time to ingest the nutrients that best aid in muscle growth, such as

Protein

Carbohydrates

Creatine

Is after your workout. Preferably within the hour. During this time the body will process these nutrients at its maximum efficiency, building lean muscle and metabolizing the carbs.

Secondly, ingesting a similar amount of carbs, protein and/or creatine before you workout can have beneficial effects. Much more so than outside the hour surrounding your workout.

This being said, I know that when I eat some junk food in the evening, my workout the next day is much more painful than normal. My cardio abilities are lessened and my lifting doesn’t feel as smooth and I struggle to really push myself. And while this sounds like a bad thing, it really spurred me on to eat food I knew would fuel me well.

For those of you who don’t want to go the way of supplement drinks, there certainly are recommended foods:

Lean poultry

Fresh fruit and veg

Complex carbs

Fibre

Plenty of water

While this is a basic guide, if you’re regularly fuelling yourself with pizza and soda you’re doing yourself a disservice.

Bodybuilding nutrition isn’t rocket science, but it can mean the difference between flabby and ripped and I know which one I’d rather be.

One of the most sought after things in the world for men (and for women) is washboard abs. Very little in the male physique is so coveted, surrounded by mystery and urban myth and so difficult to achieve.

Why Aim For Washboard Abs?

That said, having a great 6 pack is something that every man can be proud of. Whether it’s just to take your shirt off and feel proud of your appearance or to pose in the gym or to catch the eye of the ladies at the beach, no other body feature will be as eye-catching.

As a personal trainer, this is how you are judged. Have even the tiniest bit of a beer belly and people don’t respect you. Washboard abs are the biggest request, as in ‘teach me to get a rock hard abdomen’.

The biggest urban myth involved in the attainment of this look is that simply doing 100’s of sit ups or crunches will suffice with little other effort. Now, ironically, the sort of person that will do hundreds of crunches a day in his or her search for a six pack is also the sort of person that eats healthily, which is the real trick.

It’s simple. If you have a covering of fat over your abs, nobody will be able to see them. You could do a billion crunches and it would make no difference.

The other thing that people do that isn’t as effective as you may think is to isolate the abdominal muscles and try to exercise them individually. You’re far better off working on your ‘core’ as a whole and do exercises that work on your balance, which work that entire section. For example doing your crunches on an exercise ball will give you much more of a great result than simply doing them on the hard, stable floor.

And it’s not just crunches that you can do with an exercise ball that will work your abs. Push ups will not do a lot normally for your abdominals, but try them while perched on a ball and you’ll feel the difference immediately. Place the ball beneath your feet and it will work your core while you balance doing the push ups.

A word of warning however, don’t use the ball or balancing exercises while lifting a heavy weight. It won’t take much from there to pull a muscle and injure yourself.

Once you get into the habit of using an exercise ball in your core and fitness exercises, you’ll wonder how you didn’t think of it before. This is just one of the secrets to building washboard abs that you’ll find in the No Nonsense Muscle Building guide.

When will you need high intensity training?

Often you will reach a plateau. It happens to everybody, from runners to weight lifters to every extreme of fitness enthusiast. You exercise away pushing yourself and you seem to get nowhere. It’s as though your body has just got used to the exercise you’re doing.

And that’s pretty much exactly what it is. Your muscles and your body have become accustomed to the same exercises at the same intensity at probably the same time of day in the same order.

Often it can be hard for someone trying to tone up, or build big muscles, to tell if they’ve had a good workout. Is it when:

You’ve done all of your planned exercises?

Your muscles are aching?

You got bored of doing what you were doing?

For most people it’s one or more of these things.

And they may well be fooling themselves.

In reality when you think you’ve reached a plateau, you probably have and the only thing for it is to do more high intensity training. You have to lift to failure and then find that extra push.

If you’re not pushing yourself, your body will not respond with growth and/or fat burning.

Some excellent ways I’ve found to get past the hump are as follows:

Increase The Weight

Obvious huh? A lot of people don’t keep records and have no plan. They lift some weights, see some results and then lose faith when those same weights don’t give the same results after a few weeks. Well, your body has got used to them, so dial it up a notch.

If you can get to 8-10 reps on a particular weight and you’re not experiencing the threat of failure, your weight isn’t heavy enough.

The increase doesn’t have to be massive, but it should make it again a challenge.

Change Your Exercise

If you are so comfortable with a particular exercise that it’s not working for you, dump it. Get a new one. Even one with which you are uncomfortable. Take yourself out of your comfort zone and push yourself.

Rest Less

Now I don’t mean between workouts, but between sets. Are you resting for an appropriate time or just as long as you feel like? Take a stopwatch to the gym and make sure you use it.

Stop chatting as well. This will prevent you from losing focus and leaving too much time between sets.

Pre-Exhaustion

Ever heard of this. The thing is that often an exercise that works 2 muscles will prevent both from being worked properly. This will prevent growth and you won’t even think that this is happening unless you know what to look for. Pre-exhaustion means that you work the muscle that’s not getting the full workout you desire, beforehand.

Supersets

This is a favorite of mine that I’ve been using for years and a lot of people will tell you that it’s not a good idea, but hey, it’s worked for me.

Supersets are seperate exercises, working the same muscle, that you perform one after each other with no rest time in between.

Partial Reps

Not completing the full range of motion in the exercise you’re doing will work your muscles in different ways. Experiment with this, but if you’re not sure, ask an expert or trainer.

Mix It Up

Change your workout. Do it at different times to usual. Do a different order or change the day you work certain muscles. Change your diet before you work out. Try new things.

My absolute favorite way to beat this myself, is to make sure I’m safe (have a workout buddy or spotter) and once I’ve reached the point of failure, I keep going. I absolutely push myself to the max and then a little bit more.

High intensity training is perfect for when you’ve reached that place where nothing is working. Where whatever you put in, you’re getting back nothing but sore muscles. Always be raising the bar!

I would say that the average person will start off in his or her muscle building career by thinking that slaving away at the gym would be enough to produce lean muscle. People see the well toned athlete and think about the effort it must have taken to look like that. What people don’t see is the discipline and bodybuilding dietprograms that people who wish to have awesomely muscled bodies live with.

You’ll notice that on the whole, thinner people eat less than fatter people. It’s a fact of life. If you want to weigh 170 pounds, eat like someone who does weigh 170 pounds.

Some people eat like a horse and seem to never put any weight on. Sometimes that’s a benefit of a fast metabolism, but mostly because they’ve done something to have a fast metabolism. Hopefully it’s lots of exercise that they’ve done to get to that state.

Getting really fit. Having washboard abs. Being made of lean muscle. All these are the result of hard work and strict eating plans. No more beer and pizza every night. Once a month, if you’re lucky. But then you really enjoy it.

As well as the calorie benefits, eating well helps you build and maintain muscles. Eating too little won’t allow your muscles to grow and you’ll just end up puny and probably flabby.

As I’ve mentioned, and as you probably know already, proteins are the building blocks of muscle. You’ll find that most bodybuilding diets are high in protein. But not only that, but complex carbs and essential fats are vital to keep a great balance. An effective bodybuilding diet will include masses of protein.

Foods high in protein include:

Chicken and Turkey – Other meat is also high in protein but also in fat

Fish – Salmon, Tuna – Also providing healthy oils and fats

Dairy – Cottage cheese and yoghurts

Nuts – Peanuts, almonds etc

Eggs

One of the awesome benefits of protein is that not only does it encourage muscle growth and fat loss, it costs the body more calories to digest than any other food type.

Complex carbs are things like

Brown rice, wholegrain pasta and wholegrain cereals

Vegetables

And of course the healthy fats you find in oily fish such as mackerel and sardines, as well as nuts and seeds. And if you have to cook with oil, try rapeseed and olive oil.

As part of a healthy diet you would definitely ensure that you are always fully hydrated. Drinking water throughout your day and making doubly sure you have a ready supply when you workout. Replacing the fluid you lose through increased sweating. This also enables your body to flush out toxins and increase recovery.

In order to keep your body active, a steady supply of energy and an increased metabolism, it’s preferable to eat little and often. 5 to 6 meals per day, every 2-3 hours. Each meal containing vegetables and only a small amount of carbohydrates. Try to limit the majority of your carbs to just before or just after a workout.

Diet and nutrition are vital to the success of your muscle building endeavours. People will often work themselves into the ground and see little success. This can lead to giving up on goals which is the last thing we want.

A combination of hard work and a sensible bodybuilding diet will lead to fantastic results!
